Club Champions 2005-2006
Torbay Seniors win the DCIBA 0'60 Title.
Death Knell for Oldway Clubs? On Thursday 16th February a representative group from the Torbay Area Indoor Bowling Association and from Torbay Country Club met with executive Mayor Nick Bye. Deep concern was registered about the introduction of a public car park into the grounds of Oldway and the effect that parking charges would have on their combined membership strength of approx 750, the vast majority of whom are elderly retired. The indoor club is open on seven days per week from about 9a.m. to 10.30p.m and, on average, members visit the Oldway club three times per week and stay at least 3 hours per visit. Indoor bowling centres outside Torbay have car parking provision provided. Those few without parking facilities are able to take advantage of a free or concessionary ticket system. Torbay Country B.C. has been located in Oldway since the 1930’s and the TAIBA indoor bowling arena opened in 1974. Both clubs are tenants of the Council. Trevor Durbidge, President of TAIBA, said that, unless careful consideration is given to the plight presented to our elderly bowling community, the result could be catastrophic, forcing both clubs to close.
Seniors Double Rink Knock Out. National Quarter Finals Match Torbay I.B.C. v. Whiteknights I.B.C. (Reading) Played at Moonfleet Centre, Weymouth on Sunday 26th February 2006. After an extremely tense and enjoyable match Whiteknights of Reading proved victorious, although the result was not determined until the very last shot of the game! Duncan Summer's rink was ten shots in arrears but picked up 5 shots in the last end to make it 'game on' again! Ivan Burrows, who had led his team in exemplary fashion, found himself going into the last end needing two shots to secure overall victory. The end was running against them and John Read put the jack into the ditch. Unfortunately the bowl did not hit the jack 'square on' and so followed the jack into the ditch, but about five feet away. The opposing 'three' drew near to the ditch but the opportunity was there for Ivan to get inside the opposition's bowl. However, just prior to his final delivery, the opposing skip made contact with their 'ditchside' draw to put the bowls even closer! You could see the look of determination on Ivan's face as he leaned forward to deliver his last bowl. All eyes followed its' path and progress towards the ditch but the bowl stopped just a whisker away! So well done Whiteknights - best of luck in the Semi's !
